Here’s 7 ways to grow your revenue by encouraging your guests to spend more time with you and spend their money with a smile.
1. Create Spaces Where People Want To Spend Time
Whether your guests are on a short stay or vacationing for two weeks, creating a feeling of ‘home away from home’ will make them feel welcome, happy and relaxed.
Good interior design can create a persuasive environment that encourages guests to spend their money with a smile. Comfortable spaces with softer lighting, sofas and coffee tables where your guests can ‘hang out’, read a magazine and grab a coffee and sweet treat. Perhaps you can create a ‘special’ afternoon tea for adults and the kids can create their own pix-and-mix ice cream sundae for free.
2. Entertain Them
The more relaxing ‘down-time’ they spend with you the more likely they are to take advantage of the little extras you have to offer.
The art in up-selling is to focus on the guests’ needs. The last thing you want to do is either offend your guests by being too pushy, or swing too far the other way and leave money on the table your guests would have happily spent.
You want to enhance the guest experience – be charming and offer advice rather than giving them the hard sell. Offering your guests options and choices shows you as helpful rather than repellent – pushing them into a sale is they don’t want.
There are many up-sell opportunities for your front desk staff as well as your food and beverage staff. We’ve all experienced a friendly waiter recommending a complimentary side dish or bottle of wine. Here are some other ideas…
- People love getting a special deal and don’t we all enjoy a little extra luxury while away from home? During check-in, you can always ask your guests if they would like to upgrade to a Premier suite with private balcony and Jacuzzi bath for just £30 more than the standard room they have booked.
- And not everyone is on a fixed schedule. Some might be happy to stay a bit longer if you can offer them a great discount on one extra night.
- Get a bit more creative. Perhaps during the holiday season you can offer a festive package – decorate their room with a small Christmas tree? Add some festive goodies – like cookies and small gifts for the kids.
4. Take Advantage of Your Point of Sale Opportunities
Love the little soaps and shampoos that come with the room? We all know guests like to help themselves to a few before they check-out and head home. You could consider adding a new revenue stream by offering ‘toiletry gift sets’ or hotel branded towels, bathrobes and linens. Perhaps your local area has a speciality sweet treat like “Scottish Tablet”. What thoughtful, quality ‘easy to pick-up’ gifts can you showcase at ‘point of sale’ to encourage impulse spending for those heading home?
5. Partner With Local Businesses and Attractions To Provide Special Deals/Packages
What local businesses, services and attractions are you’re guests going to seek out and enjoy? Network and build relationships with other local businesses (tourist attractions, restaurants, local beauty salons…)
A hotel could offer discounted attraction tickets or if working with a business partner like a restaurant, the hotel could offer a voucher that entitles the person to a free appetizer/starter with an evening meal. And those people who are dining in the restaurant can be given a special rate at the hotel if they show the hotelier a receipt from the restaurant partner.
It’s a win win for all parties and a little bonus for your hotel guests.
6. Cater for The Family Pet
Can you offer a few pet-friendly rooms? You can charge more for and you’ve opened your hotel up to a new and different segment of the travel market.
7. Offer Wedding Gift Packages
A way to differentiate your hotel and boost your revenue is to allow wedding and honeymoon couples to enhance their stay at your hotel. How? Let them add ‘wedding gift’ items to their gift list that allows their family and friends to purchase those lovely little extras – like Champaign cocktails in the bar, spa treatments, a golf lesson or dinner at your hotel’s restaurant.
Great gift ideas and a fabulous way for couples to make the most of their honeymoon experience with you.
